Ram-Leela’s ‘Laal Ishq’

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Goliyon ki raasleela-Ramleela’ struck a chord within and enveloped me with its undying romance. If passion, madness, devotion, love, faith and revolution can be put together to summarise the film, I would still fall short of words to explain the colourful, magnificent canvas of love. The story is inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, but I would like to mention that Leela was an ardent, stunning and audacious rebirth of Juliet. Ram was adorable yet powerful both physically and emotionally. The story is based on the Rajaadi and Sanedaa communities of Rajasthan where Ram and Leela’s love flourishes.

The violence projected by Mr. Bhansali is brutal, giving a sense of the existing reality between those communities. Ram and Leela just kept on evolving in their ‘laal ishq’ even while they were surrounded by bloodshed. The music was gripping and took the story forward.
Each song was a testimony to their love story. I saw myself noticing all the details in the frame including costumes, set design, make-up, hair, accessories. The one thing about Mr. Bhansali’s films that always appeals to me is the grandeur and his larger-than-life execution. It enhances the overall impact of the film. He creates a world which is far off from reality and puts life into the non-existing existence.

Love is the strongest emotion and it has the power to conquer rivalry and differences. Their love went through an ordeal and only death united them forever. I wished Ram-Leela would have changed Romeo and Juliet’s sad love story and they would have lived happily ever after.
Leela was real and she connected with me. Deepika Padukone let her guard down and surrendered to Leela. She is impeccable and striking in the film.
Ranveer Singh was a rustic, chiselled and valiant Ram. Ram won hearts as he was the only one who never spoke through a gun and spread smiles with his quirky side. Ram and Leela’s love for each other makes me say their name together as Ramleela.

“Besharam, Battameez, Khudgarz…yahi toh hota hai ishq” and they made me redefine love once again.
